Staffordshire Sprint and County Championships 2025

Staffordshire Sprint and County Championships 2025

Block out your diaries for the weekend of 28th – 29th June because UK Racketlon is returning to Keele University for a double-header of the Sprint Event and the County Championships! After the success of the world’s first ever Sprint tournament last year, we are looking to make this year’s event even bigger and better!

Staffordshire Open Racketlon Sprint Tournament – Saturday 28th June, Keele University

Firstly, on Saturday 28th June we are delighted to bring to you the Staffordshire Open Racketlon Sprint Tournament, Keele University Sports Centre in Keele, Staffordshire. (Entry opening soon!)

So, what is a sprint tournament, and why should you enter?

Innovative Format:
This tournament introduces the concept of Racketlon Sprint, featuring sets that are played to 11 points instead of the conventional 21. At 10-10, the next point determines the winner, eliminating the need for a two-point lead.

Streamlined Experience:
In an effort to speed-up proceedings, there will be no switching ends or extended warm-up sessions, with the exception of the necessary squash ball warm-up.

More Matches:
Participants are guaranteed five matches, as opposed to the usual three, ensuring ample playing time and the opportunity to compete against a diverse range of opponents in groups of six. We are definitely expecting some more upsets in the seedings and matches with this!

Whether you’re a seasoned racketlon player or new to the sport, the Staffordshire Open Racketlon Sprint Tournament offers a unique opportunity to experience racketlon in a new and exciting format. In addition, it is a perfect opportunity to practice for both the county champs (see below!) and also the World Team Championships, as these are both played to 11 as well!

To secure your place in the Staffordshire Open Racketlon Sprint Tournament, enter via Tournament Software as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Read on below for information about the 2025 County Championships!

UK Racketlon County Championships – Sunday 29th June, Keele University

The 2nd event of the weekend, also being held at Keele University, is the UK Racketlon County Championships, taking place on Sunday 29th June. The 2025 Racketlon County Championships offers players a unique opportunity to play in a team event within the UK Tournament schedule, with a mix of singles, mixed and doubles.

County Div 2 Champions 2024 –  Hampshire

Once again we return to Keele University for the UK Racketlon County Championships. 2024 saw Surrey win for the second year in succession as they defeated Yorkshire. Can Leon Griffiths match Duncan Stahl and captain a side to three consecutive County Championship titles (Duncan achieving this with Middlesex in 2011, 2012 and 2014*). The second division was won by Hampshire, with the second seeds defeating top seeded Herts in a tightly-contested final!

*and before someone asks, we didn’t have a county champs in 2013!

Here’s what you need to know:

Match Structure:
Each match will consist of 3x men’s singles, 1x women’s singles, 1x men’s doubles, and 1x mixed doubles, providing a variety of playing opportunities.

11-Point Sets:
Sets will follow the Racketlon Sprint format, with each set played to 11 points.

Streamlined Experience:
There will be no warm-up sessions, allowing for a more efficient tournament schedule.

Team Composition:
Counties must field a team of at least 3x men and 1x woman, with no maximum limit on players. Each team must contain a minimum of four players, of which one must be a woman. It’s worth noting that if a side contained two women, one could be nominated to play as a man throughout the match. There is no limit on squad sizes and no requirement for the four singles players to also play doubles. Team make up is at the discretion of the captain. Multiple teams per county are allowed. Any queries about this – ask James Pope at new2racketlon@gmail.com or join the County Champs WhatsApp group and ask in there!

Qualification Criteria:
Players must meet one of the following criteria to qualify for their county team:

– county you were born in

– county you live in

– membership in a relevant racket sports club within the county (any of the four component sports or a racketlon club)

– previous representation in the County Championships for that county (as long as you haven’t represented a different county since – the Jon Spinks rule)

Any entry queries, please contact James Pope (new2racketlon@gmail.com)

Registration – now open!!
Interested teams can register online through the Tournament Software website before the deadline of Sunday 22nd June. The team captain is responsible for entering the whole team online (don’t enter as an individual!) and will split the cost between their team. Total cost per team is £125, irrespective of how many players are on the team.

Please be aware the usual rules regarding refunding entries due to withdrawal will apply. If you are intending to enter a team, please contact Tournament Director James Pope (new2racketlon@gmail.com)to let him know which county you will be captaining (you can do this in advance of entering). The Garden City Open 2025 – Review

The Garden City Open 2025 – Review

The Garden City Open Review

The UK Racketlon 2025 season kicked off last weekend with one of the tour’s favourite tournament venues at Letchworth Sports and Tennis Club!

This sold-out tournament really showcased UK Racketlon’s depth, with the men’s A grade having 6 out of the top 20 ranked UK players and the women’s with 2 out of the top 10 battling it out.

Mens A

The men’s A draw was wide open, with 8 very solid players. It was anyone’s tournament to win!

#1 seed Ross Wilson had two tight matches to get to the final. There, he faced unseeded James Hempstead, who had two convincing wins, with his squash ability on show, only losing 7 points before the final! The final was a great match, with only a few points in it. After squash, James was +2, before extending that lead to +7. A solid tennis win vs Ross led him to his first A grade title! Well done James.

A mention must go to Jamie Watkin-Rees’ tennis performance across all three matches, culminating in an impressive 21-7 win to take 3rd place over Alex Du Noyer.

Women’s

The women’s draw proceeded as expected from the seedings, with #1 youngster Holly Ranson meeting #2 Susie Dilloway in the final. They were level going into the squash – Holly’s squash has certainly improved and on this occasion proved too strong for Susie with a 21-5 win which set Holly up nicely for her first A grade title of the year. We saw 2 new players into the women’s draw – welcome to Olivia and Millie, we hope you enjoyed it and we’ll see you at another tournament soon!

Men’s B

The winner of the Men’s B was another junior, Raif Fontanelli. Raif knocked out #2 seed Rob Rhodes in the first round, showing off his squash talent. He faced #1 seed Jack Taylor in the final, and after a long, even tennis match managed to get the win +7. Raif retains his men’s B title from the Letchworth tournament in October.

Great to see the junior talent in Holly and Raif, both aged 17, winning in open categories!

Men’s C

George Robert, tournament organiser reports on the Men’s C winner, John Nuttall. ‘He heard about racketlon just this year and thought what a great concept! Came down from Bolton, had told his mates about it who also think what a great concept. Already eyeing up Staffs Open and a Lancashire team for counties. He came, he saw and he conquered.’

John beat relative newcomer Malcolm Saperia in the final. Malcolm took out the #1 seed in the first round with a convincing win, helped along with a 21-3 win in the table tennis.

Men’s D

Newcomer James Bridge had an impressive performance on his way to the title, only losing 15 points in total in his squash sets! He beat Jordan Whitmore in a close final, trading badminton and squash specialities. Jordan also only lost 5 points of badminton over 3 sets!

Junior U14’s

IWe had a very competitive U14 junior category, with lots of excellent matches and talent on show! Edward Baker was the overall winner. He was stretched by Peter Pospisil, winning by just 2 points after Peter’s impressive 21-1 squash display brought him back into the match. Joseph Fitches came runner up, with two big wins and a close loss against the category champion, Edward. Well done to Millie Rhodes who held her own in her first tournament!

Full results can be found on tournament software.

Overall, it was a great start to the season with lots of newcomers, many of whom did very well for a first tournament. We also had one father/daughter combo, and two father/son combos playing, which was amazing!

A massive thank you to tournament organiser George Roberts and tournament director Kieran Shelley for running an excellent tournament, and to Letchworth Sports and Tennis Club for being such great hosts. We look forward to returning in October!

2025 World Team Championships Selection

2025 World Team Championships Selection

Hi everyone,

Ahead of the Racketlon British Championships 2025 entry opening, I [Matilda Parslow] wanted to give you all a little bit of information regarding the GB selection committee and the selection process for the 2025 World Championships (it’s already that time again!).

Last year was UK Racketlon’s most successful World Championships ever, and I am delighted to say that Jack Bishop and Peter Barton will be continuing along with me on the selection panel this year.

Dan Busby will no longer be continuing on the panel as he has other commitments coming up, and we thank him for all the hard work put into the teams last year, ultimately leading the GB 1st Team to a silver medal in 2024. His advice and input was so integral to the team selections in 2024 and we are very grateful for all the time and effort he put in.

World Team Championships Selection / British Championships

The World Team Championships will be held, for the third and final year, in Rotterdam between Wednesday 30th July and Sunday 3rd August 2025, and the GB Selection committee will be selecting our squads across the open categories and age groups (both junior and senior grades). Further information regarding the World Championships Teams and Singles Championships is due to be released soon.

As in previous years, selection will be based on a range of criteria including performance on the World Tour and at UK Tour events. However, the primary selection opportunity is the British Championships which will be held at Parklangley in Beckenham on 12th-13th April 2025.

Entry for the British Championships will open at 6pm on Sunday 9th February.

For players who wish to represent an age group criteria (juniors or seniors), please ensure you enter that age group if it is offered at the British Championships. Let me know if there are any issues with this.

If you are unable to attend the British Championships, but you are eager to be considered for selection for a team at the World Championships, please let the selection committee know by contacting me or one of the other committee members or grabbing one of us at a tournament.

Selection takes place soon after the British Championships. If you do want to be considered and you’re not playing at the British Championships, let us know sooner rather than later!

If you have any questions about anything at all regarding the World Teams Championships then please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Thank you and good luck to everyone in all the upcoming tournaments.

Super Series Review

We’re now halfway through the 2024 Super Series and it’s time to look at how the first two tournaments panned out, as well as looking at the players who have qualified already for the FINALS tournament on Sunday 1st December in Nottingham!

As a quick recap, the super series categories are: Men’s, Women’s, Boys, Girls, Seniors, Men’s Newcomers, Women’s Newcomers. Newcomers eligibility: any player that played their first UK Racketlon tournament in 2024.

Surrey Classic – Super Series 1

The Surrey Classic was held at the lovely Bourne Club on 1st September, where the players and supporters enjoyed some lovely sunshine (or extreme heat, if you happened to be in the badminton hall!).

A big thank you to Bourne Club and an even bigger thanks to tournament director Sam Barker!

Men’s A

The Men’s A was all to play for, with one player saying that ‘basically anyone could win it.’ And that definitely was the case!

First, we must mention the racketlon legend that is Ray Jordan making his comeback. He put up an excellent performance against young whipper snapper Anant Gupta, but didn’t quite get over the line with a +4 win to Anant. Great to see you back on court, Ray!

The first semi-final saw recent returner James Simpson take on Anant. Despite losing the badminton 21-3, James managed to hold big enough leads in the other three sports to book his place in the final.

In the other half, James Langworthy played Alex Du Noyer (how many times has that been now?!), with James digging deep in the middle two sports to take the win and meet the other James in the final!

In the final, it was an extremely close battle, going into the tennis nearly even. A special mention must go to James L’s squash – he just did not give up on any point against the squash specialist James S, which went on to matter a LOT.. After an extremely long and tense tennis match, James L emerged victorious with the scoreline at 19-20! Anant beat Alex +26 to take 3rd place.

Women’s A

The Women’s A was contested in a 4-way round robin, all competing in search of the automatic qualification to the Super Series finals.

Newcomer and padel player Bethany Eccles put up an excellent fight in her first ever racketlon tournament, winning a set of table tennis, squash, and tennis throughout her matches! Definitely an all-rounder to look out for in the future. Bethany was victorious against also-fairly-newcomer Kayleigh Chapman, with an excellent performance all the way through by both players in a tight match.

Ellie Thomas took 2nd place, with dominant squash wins against Kayleigh and Bethany to pick up another medal to add to her ever-growing collection! Matilda Parslow was the overall winner, not needing to get out her tennis racket – this means she is the first women’s qualifier for the Finals event!

+55 Seniors

Izzy Bramhall wasn’t seeded 1 for nothing! A recent entry to the over 55’s category, Izzy breezed her way to another title, defeating 3 players and playing some very solid squash to get her to victory.

2nd place went to Malcolm Saperia, who had some incredible tennis wins to get to the final.

3rd and 4th was contested between table tennis whizz David Barr and Malcolm Burr, with David using his table tennis skills to record a +26 victory for 3rd.

Men’s B

#1 seed Jon Spinks had comfortable wins against Luke Penna and Ian Johnston to make the B final, with unseeded long-time racketlon player Rakesh Gupta taking out the 2nd seed Rob Bozier in the first round. However Rakesh couldn’t take it one further, losing +15 to David Bennett. In the final, Jon Spinks was consistent across the board, beating David in each sport to need 8 in tennis to win!

Men’s C

U18s GB player Thomas Agombar was the dark horse in this men’s category, only needing 6 points of tennis across all his matches on his way to take the title. He beat #2 seed Andrew Heath in the final, which included an incredible table tennis set. #1 seed Yudo Wong took 3rd place with a +17 win over Mark Brown.

Men’s D

The father-son duo of Stuart and James Vincent were seeded #2 and #1 respectively – and met in the final! In an intense match where both players did not want to lose, it went right down to the wire, with James beating his father +3 overall in what was an excellent performance. Patrick Jeffrey picked up 3rd place with a +22 victory over Shayan Joya thanks to dominant TT and tennis victories.

Junior U14s

Newcomer Cameron Firth is definitely one to watch in the junior categories, winning the U14 category comfortably, dropping just one squash set throughout, and even that was in deuce! Recent convert Henry Dobson took 2nd place, with strong wins over Noah Penna and 3rd placed Joseph Fitches.

Stamford Open – Super Series 2

And now we move onto the second Super Series event, which took place at Stamford School, Stamford on 15th September. Stamford has become a regular event on the UK tour, boasting excellent facilities and providing the Midlands with a great, convenient tournament! Many thanks to tournament organiser Kieran Shelley for all his hard work on this event.

An incredible statistic about this competition is that a whopping 19 of the players had a family relation or partner also playing! We also had 14 women, with a full A and B grade, which is so great to see on the tour.

Men’s A

A rare 4 player round robin made up the Men’s A, with tournament regulars Dan Busby and Matt Davidson facing the challenge of GB 2nd team player Tom Atherton and tournament organiser Kieran Shelley.

Matt and Dan had an extremely close match to play for 1st and 2nd place, with Matt getting the 15 he needed in tennis to win the title and become the 2nd automatic qualifier for the Super Series finals!

 Men’s A Winner: Matt Davidson

Stamford Racketlon Mens A Winner

Women’s A

The Women’s A was extremely strong, with 2 British Champions among the 6 players.

In box A, #1 seed Holly Ranson, and current women’s British Champion, booked her place in the final needing just 5 points of tennis. Newcomer Yuzen Wong put up a great fight against England table tennis player Mollie Patterson, losing on a gummi arm!

In box B, #2 seed Jo Shelley had a good win against returning player Susie Dilloway, whilst unfortunately Kirsten Atkinson had to retire with an injury.

In the final matches, Jo Shelley put up a good fight against Holly Ranson, but Holly took the win with the tennis at 5-5, becoming the 2nd automatic qualifier in the women’s super series. Susie Dilloway took 3rd place over Mollie Patterson – great to see Susie back on court!

Men’s B

Another round robin made up the Men’s B grade, with Billy Sutton-Mattocks taking the men’s B title, using his badminton and squash strengths to power to victory. It was great to see Nick Rate returning from a nasty knee injury; unfortunately he had to retire from his 3rd match – but welcome back!

Ian Johnston recorded two comfortable wins for 2nd, with Leigh Ware (and Stamford School teacher!) coming in 3rd place.

 Mens B Winner: Billy Sutton-Mattocks

Stamford Racketlon Men's B Winner

Women’s B

It was wonderful to have 3 new players in the Women’s B draw, and some familiar faces from a while ago too!

In group A, newcomer Sophie Brealey beat #1 seed Fiona James in a really close match to make it through to the final.

In group B, a former racketlon junior, Claudia Vincent (yes, a relation of the other Vincents playing in the men’s!) made her comeback to the sport, with 3 comfortable victories to meet Sophie B in the final. In the final, Sophie’s badminton proved too strong for Claudia, with Sophie getting the 9 points she needed in tennis to win her first B grade tournament!

GB Junior player Emma Ranson was improving with every match and finished with a great win over Fiona for 3rd place.

 L-R Sophie Brealey (1st), Claudia Vincent (2nd)

Men’s C

The Men’s C was incredibly close all round, with 2 players winning 3 / 4 of their matches, but losing to different people! The winner was Tim Fitches, who only started competing on the UK racketlon circuit this year, but has already got 4 tournaments under his belt! Tim just pipped David Swindell to the post, with Malcolm Saperia taking 3rd place.

Men’s D

Stuart Vincent (father of James and Claudia, also playing!) won all his matches in the D grade to win the title. Stuart only lost 2 rubbers all day in a dominant performance.

Chun Ho Fu, playing in his 2nd tournament of the season, took 2nd place with table tennis player James Patterson coming in 3rd.

Junior U14’s

Joseph Fitches (Tim’s son) improved on his 3rd place finish in Surrey, winning all of his matches and taking the U14 title here in Stamford. Joseph dropped just the one rubber all day (table tennis to Charlie Hunter), in a truly impressive showing.

Sam Ware (Leigh’s son) came second, and Charlie Hunter came third. It’s lovely to see the next generation of racketlon players coming through the ranks and we hope to see you all again soon!
