Yorkshire Open 2024 – Review

Yorkshire Open 2024 – Review

Yorkshire Open 2024 – Review

We returned for another iteration of the Yorkshire Open at the wonderful York University on Sunday 14th July.

Despite the weather – and the tennis and football events going on! – we had a healthy number of participants and some great matches – great prep for all those heading out to Rotterdam in a few week’s time!

Men’s A Singles

The men’s A draw featured some new and some regular players, with 6 out of the 8 players competing in the World Champs this year.

It was great to see Will Gregson making a return, and he showed his squash skills off with some great performances, coming 4th overall after a tight loss over Tom Atherton.

Newcomer and squash player Gavin Stephenson also showed us his skills, narrowly beating both Tom Watson and Peter Barton to come 5th in the A grade in just his 3rd tournament, having won the B grade in Newcastle last year!

Seeds #1 Matt Davidson and #2 Anant Gupta made it through to the final, but Anant was pushed all the way by Tom Atherton who came 3rd overall.

In the final, there was nothing in it after the first two sports, but unfortunately Matt had to retire halfway through the squash. Well done to Anant on his A grade title.

The highlight match of this draw was friends and rivals Jordan Marcus and Tom Watson, playing for 7th place in the final match of the day.

Tom showed off his class tt play (show off!) by hitting a double handed backhand winner to win the table tennis to 13, before they battled it out in the middle two. In the tennis, Jordan was so close, reaching 18 before Tom clinched the 13 points needed and the win. No need to mention the conduct warnings given during this match!

L-R Matt Davidson (2nd), Anant Gupta (1st), Tom Atherton (3rd)

Women’s Singles

5 of the 6 players in the women’s draw will be playing in Rotterdam, and there were some excellent battles throughout this draw of two round robins followed by the finals, 3/4th and 5/6th playoffs.

The 1# and 2# seeds, Matilda Parslow and Satarra Thaker respectively, won their boxes to set up a 5th match in a year between the pair, the first being at the Yorkshire Open last year! Matilda came out victorious, winning her 3rd title in York, but not without a spirited fight from Satarra, with the squash going to 22-20!

3rd place was taken by tt star Mollie Patterson, who beat Kirsten Atkinson with a convincing win in the front two sports. Despite a great squash set from Kirsten, it wasn’t quite enough and Mollie sealed her podium finish with a 10-6 tennis win.

Ellie Thomas came 5th, defeating Fiona James, who played very well and was in good spirits all day, despite having entered the Women’s B and been put up to the A!

L-R Satarra Thaker (2nd), Matilda Parslow (1st), Mollie Patterson (3rd)

Men’s B Singles

#1 seed Sam Barker was defeated by Men’s C Sprint Champion Ishan Bairoliya in the semi-finals, and #2 seed Shane Lindsay lost to newcomer Aaron Booth in the first round, meaning that the finals would be anyone’s game!

Ishan showed his strength across all matches in the first two sports, winning 5 out of 6 sets to 7 or less, setting him up nicely to get the points he required in the final two sports and become the men’s B grade champion. He beat Aaron Booth in the final – a fantastic run for Aaron.

A highlight of the 3/4th place match was Sam Barker commenting that he’d never been bagelled before (losing a sport 21-0) – giving squash supremo Tom Trott a massive goal to try and ruin Sam’s record…. And he managed it! Well done to Tom on his first racketlon podium finish.

L-R Aaron Booth (2nd), Ishan Bairoliya (1st), Tom Trott (3rd)

Men’s C Singles

In group A Charles Moseley won both his matches to set up the final with Theo Bamert, the group B winner, with both seeded players losing one or both of their first matches. #1 seed Tim Fitches narrowly lost to Malcom Saperia by just one point.

In the final, Theo produced an amazing 21-2 win in the badminton to give him the victory – and the men’s C trophy!

Henry Vernon, seeded #2, won a close game against Malcolm to take 3rd place.

L-R Charles Moseley (2nd), Theo Bamert (1st), Henry Vernon (3rd)

 O55s Singles

Group A was tough in the 055s, with two racketlon legends in Rakesh Gupta (seeded #1) and Izzy Bramhall. Izzy recently won the O55s in Ebbisham. Izzy’s table tennis and squash skills were too good in this box, putting her through to the final.

In group B, #2 seed Lee Gregson dominated, winning both of his matches to set up a final vs Izzy. Izzy proved too strong for Lee, with a confident performance in the first three sports to pick up her second senior title this year!

Rakesh beat Steve Halliday with an impressive first two sports to take 3rd place, and Gary Lane beat Robert Pearson to come 5th.

Staffordshire Sprint Open 2024 – Review

Staffordshire Sprint Open 2024 – Review

Staffordshire SPRINT Open 2024 – Review

Racketlon’s first ever Sprint tournament took place at Keele University on Saturday 15th June 2024. Players competed in boxes, first to 11 points rather than the usual 21 points, with some categories having a subsequent semi-final and final. Everyone had at least 5 matches in this new, exciting format, meaning we saw some upsets and unexpected results!

Men’s A Singles

Men’s A group A saw #1 Luke Griffiths take on a trio of ‘Jons’ in Jonny Ritter, Johnny Bisphan and Jon Spinks, comfortably winning the group without needing his tennis racket. Jonny Ritter came 2nd to go through into the 1-4th position in the next stage.

In Group B #2 Dan Busby also eased through, just needing 5 points of tennis (against James Langworthy) to qualify. Jamie Watkin-Rees secured an excellent victory over James to come 2nd in the box, with Tom Watson and James moving into the 5-8th position matches.

In the semi-finals, it was the two seeds and top players Luke and Dan who progressed to the final, with Dan being pushed by Jonny Ritter all the way. Luke was crowned the first Sprint men’s winner with a convincing win – not needing a tennis racket all day!

L-R Luke Griffiths (1st), Dan Busby (2nd)

Women’s A Singles

The women’s draw was a box of 6, with all players playing 5 matches. Unfortunately Kate Russell had to pull out during the first match due to injury – Dan McMillan kindly stepped in to play some friendlies in her place.

#1 seed Matilda Parslow was the winner, being pushed close by table tennis supremo Mollie Pattinson, who came 2nd, recording two 11-0 tt victories on her way! Racketlon stalwart Dianne Baker came 3rd with an excellent badminton and squash performance throughout. Regular B grade players Kayleigh Chapman and Hannah Taylor were 4th and 5th respectively, playing some more experienced players along the way.

  L-R Matilda Parslow (1st), Mollie Patterson (2nd)

Redbridge Racketlon Womens B Podium

Men’s B Singles

There was lots of excitement in group A as James Trueman, Ryan Bezer and Chase Burgess all won two matches and lost one. This meant we had a gumi arm playoff to qualify for the 1-4 stage! Chase won the playoff, with James Trueman coming in 2nd.

Group B was equally close, with Andrew Heath and Jordan Marcus winning two matches each, and Kieran Shelly and Thomas Agombar with 1 win each. Two of these matches were +1, really showing how tight this whole box of players was!

In the 1-4th stage, group A players Chase and James Trueman were victorious over Jordan and Andrew respectively, to set up a 2nd match of the day between them! James won the first group stage match +1, but Chase fought back in this final to triumph over James +11, with excellent table tennis and squash win to close down the gap and to take the Men’s B sprint title.

L-R Chase Burgess (1st), James Trueman (2nd)

Men’s C Singles

Group A also had lots of excitement with a gumi arm playoff required for 2nd place in the box! Bora Molla came top of the group with some solid tennis victories to secure his place in the semi-finals, and then the other three players all won 1 match and lost 2!

Badminton extraordinaire Callum Mitchell managed to take the gumi arm win, despite George Roberts electing to serve in the tennis and firing down a huge first serve – twice!!

Group B was tough for anyone not named Ishan Bairoliya, as he doled out 4 bagels throughout his dominant table tennis and badminton performances to book his place in the semi-finals. Jon Healey came 2nd, in his usual annual foray into racketlon, while Ray Ryan and Phil Pinto battled it out for 3rd place with some very tight scores, Ray just clinching the win in the tennis.

Group B players Ishan and Jon managed to win their semi-finals, with both matches going right to the wire. This set up a second match between them – which Ishan dominated over the first two sports, losing just 1 points in the table tennis! Ishan – men’s B awaits you..

L-R Ishan Bairoliya (1st), Jon Healey (2nd)

A massive thanks to George Roberts and Kieran Shelley for a smoothly run tournament – well done for dealing with all the gumi arms and other things that arose during a new format!

Ebbisham Surrey Open 2024 – Review

Ebbisham Surrey Open 2024 – Review

Ebbisham Surrey Open 2024 – Review

The players of the Ebbisham Open enjoyed a lovely sunny day of Racketlon on Sunday 2nd June, and we were delighted to welcome lots of newcomers to Racketlon, with 8 players in the First-timer Doubles and more throughout all the categories.

Firstly, a big thanks to Ray Ryan and Kieran Shelley for an extremely well-run tournament. Ray championed this event and made it happen – including lots of Ebbisham locals who gave it a go!

Men’s A Singles

The men’s A event was wide open, with plenty of players, both regular and new, eyeing up an A grade title.

#1 seed Jamie Watkin-Rees had a tough first round in racketlon stalwart Jack Bishop. Jack managed to get 13 points in table-tennis, Jamie’s best sport, then needing just 14 in tennis to move through to the semi finals. Angus Pederson, a former racketlon junior player more than decade ago, reemerged recently at Redbridge, winning the men’s B. He defeated +40s player Ollie Close with a huge 21-1 win in badminton to set up a semi final vs Jack.

In the other half of the draw, #2 seed Keith Lesser beat Kieran Shelley +16 to set up a semi final vs James Simpson, who moved past Rob Clayden with an epic squash battle in that match.

James Simpson was part of the GB elite team in 2013 and 2014 and is back after a decade – welcome back James!

Jack and James both won their semi finals +16 to make it to the final. James Simpson took his first A grade title, needing just 8 points in tennis to clinch the win, helped through by another huge squash win.

Angus defeated Keith to come 3rd, squeaking past with a +1 victory, helped by a massive badminton win.

L-R Jack Bishop (2nd), James Simpson (1st)

Women’s A Singles

3 regulars on the ladies UK tour, and emerging junior Ellie Thomas, made up this A grade box, with most players having played each other plenty of times!

#1 seed Matilda Parslow was the victor, winning all three matches and only dropping one set (the badminton vs Satarra).

In 2nd place was Satarra Thaker, who recorded her first ever win against 5-time O50s world champion Jo Shelley with a solid 21-6 badminton win to help her through, with Jo coming in 3rd.

+50 Singles

In the O50s we had two boxes of three, with the winners of each box playing for the title.

Group A saw #1 seed Martyn Langston winning against two newcomers, Jeremy Nixson and Volodymyr Gusak, not needing to get out his tennis racket on his way to the final.

In Group B, #2 Duncan Marlow had a tough draw in the form of Izzy Bramhall. Runner up in the World Championships in 2019, Izzy was a surprise entry into this event. It was her first racketlon singles tournament since 2019 owing to COVID and knee replacement surgery! Izzy cemented her place in the final with a brilliant 21-7 table tennis win vs Duncan, keeping the middle sports close before closing out the tennis 15-6.

David Kearnes was the 3rd player in the group, pushing Duncan far after a great 21-6 win in squash. However the experienced Duncan ground out the tennis for a +11 win.

In the final, there were 13s all around as Izzy won the first two sports, before losing the squash. However, that wasn’t a big enough margin for Marytn, as Izzy’s solid, consistent tennis brought her the O55s win! Congratulations and welcome back to singles, Izzy!

 L-R Izzy Bramhall (1st), Martyn Langston (2nd)

Redbridge Racketlon Mens 40s Winner

Women’s B Singles

Kent’s Kayleigh Chapman emerged victorious in this 4-player round robin, with newcomers Tae Catford and Sheila Finnigan, and Beth Milburn, who has returned after playing back in 2015.

Newcomer Tae Catford had an impressive start to racketlon, winning all her squash sets to less than 10. She pushed #1 seed Kayleigh all the way to the wire, with Kayleigh winning the tennis 21-15 (+4 overall) to win the title and Tae taking the runner’s up position. Well done to Kayleigh on her first UK Racketlon title!

L-R Kayleigh Chapman (1st), Tae Catford (2nd)

Redbridge Racketlon Mens 40s Winner

Men’s B Singles

#1 seed Barney Medhurst was the winner in the men’s B, winning all his matches narrowly. He had a range of wins and losses in each of the sets – just shows how different profiles of players can give such different results!

In the bottom half, newcomer Paul Puget stunned #2 seed Ishan Bairoliya +21, with a 21-1 squash win helping him through to the semi final. He then beat Andrew Heath +10, with another big squash win, before falling to #1 seed Barney +16

Thomas Agombar had heartbreak vs Dominic Williams as they thought Thomas had won but had miscalculated! They went back on the tennis court, where Thomas needed one out of the next two points, and Dominic needed both. A gumi-arm ensued and Dominic managed to win on the gumi!

Dominic’s impressive run didn’t end there, as he won the 5/6th playoff vs #2 seed Ishan +1, despite losing the table tennis 21-0!

L-R Barney Medhurst (1st), Paul Puget (2nd) (apologies for photo quality!)

Redbridge Racketlon Mens +55 Podium

Men’s C Singles

The men’s C was all to play for, with many newcomers and players who have played their first tournament this year.

Simon Woodhouse had dominant badminton performances throughout, helping him to the C grade trophy.

He beat Tim Fitches (who won his first match +1!) in the final, with a 21-6 scoreline in badminton sealing the deal.

Dhairya Patel came 3rd, beating Stephen Lydiard in a tightly contested match.

  L-R Simon Woodhouse (1st), Tim Fitches (2nd)

Redbridge Racketlon Mens B Podium

U12 Singles

Due to a last minute drop-out, the U12s was a 3 way round robin between brothers Henry and Sebastian, and newcomer Ollie Backinsell.

Elder brother Henry didn’t lose a sport on his way to victory, although had a tough table tennis battle vs Sebastian. The brothers are looking in good form as they get in some final practice before their GB debut in Rotterdam in August. Well done to Ollie in his first event – we hope to see you at another soon!

 L-R Henry Dobson (1st), Sebastian Dobson (2nd)

Redbridge Racketlon Mens C Podium

First-timer Doubles

4 pairs of new players battled it out in the first-timer doubles category. It was especially great to see so many women giving it a go!

There were some incredibly close matches and scorelines – so close in fact that it ended up with a gumi-arm playoff between 3 of the pairs for 1st place, as they all won 2 matches and lost 1! What a way to finish the day of your first tournament – a gumi-arm playoff is something most people won’t play in their whole racketlon career!

The gumi-arm playoff was between Stella Gowans and Merle Nunneley, Nicole Hard and Alex Reynolds, and Shaun Dominetto and Samantha Johnson. All three pairs played each other at one point in each of the sports to decide 1st – 3rd place.

A slight administrative/player error meant that Nicole and Alex, and Shaun and Samantha ended up all on 5 points – and the result was that they shared the victory! A special mention to all 4 of these medalists as they’re all from the home club, Ebbisham!

Well done to all the first-timers – we hope you enjoyed it!

L-R Alex Reynolds and Nicole Hard (joint 1st), Samantha Johnson and Shaun Dominetto (joint 1st)

Redbridge Racketlon Mens D Podium

We have two upcoming events before the World Champs in August – perfect final practice!
