The English Open returns after a 2 ½ year absence from the calendar for its 13th incarnation and in the process see’s Racketlon in England return to its spiritual home, the Redbridge Sports Centre. 2016 is the 8th time that Redbridge will host the English Open, which over the years has seen it combined with the Champions League, host the World Doubles Championships, the day Racketlon was on the BBC and of course the legendary Peter Nicol vs. Stefan Adamsson exhibition match. As you can see, Redbridge is a place of pride for UK Racketlon and is steeped in Racketlon history.
The English Open has been an important event on the FIR World Tour, popular with the European (particularly Scandinavian) players, with just two English winner of the title, Doug Struthers & Ed Batson. The top performers at the event have been Callum Reid & Magnus Eliasson, who are both 3 times champion, with solitary titles for Stefan Adamsson, Michi Dickert, Rickard Persson & Jasper Ratzer. We are hoping this event will be popular with players from across the continent as well as throughout the UK.
Logistically, the Redbridge venue is 2 minutes (literal) walk from the Fairlop Tube station which is on the Central Line (Red on the tube map), with easy connections to all main line rail stations as well as Heathrow & Gatwick Airport rail connections. The Redbridge facilities are second to none, quite literally Olympic class, having been used as a pre-London 2012 warm up venue for a number of Badminton squads, whilst county tennis and squash squads train here as well. With 5 channels for all sports, Table Tennis and Badminton will be played in the Jean Brown Arena, whilst squash and tennis (indoor hard court) will take place in the main Redbridge arena. A great café-bar which comes with a great viewing area over the tennis courts for spectators to enjoy those matches that reach a tight crescendo, whilst tucking into some hot food or enjoying a post-tournament pint.
A great venue, steeped in UK Racketlon history with Olympic class facilities, the 2016 English Open is an event not too miss. UK Tour events have been filling fast so far this year, so get your entries in to be certain of making the draw!
