May Redbridge Racketlon 2012
May 7th - Dave Lazarus organises once again.
With entries slightly down at 16 players, Dave advised in the future he would try something different and run on a Sunday rather than a bank holiday Monday.
There were still quite a few new players to the sport and in typical fashion a few regulars.
Elise Lazarus really stole the show and at the age of 11, finished 5th out of 16, only losing one match to the eventual winner. As pretty much the strongest squash player out of the 16, Elise can now hold her own in table tennis and tennis and the badminton needs work but the rallies are still there so not bad at all.
Cambridge debutant Anthony Barbier played his 2nd event and finished a credible 3rd.
The final was contested between number one and two seeds Keith Lesser and Oliver Close.
The table tennis was one way traffic, 21-6. Close seemed chuffed with that quoting afterwards "not much I could do there really".
The badminton came next and this was more of a battle. Lesser edged it 21-18. Then came the squash and Close who practices mainly squash these days, raced away to an unusual lead. He was starting to get a sniff he could turn the match around and keep Lesser even to single figures as the recently married man looked out of sorts.
Close couldn't quite finish the job and Lesser pulled back to level pegging, eventually losing out 21-8.
That meant Lesser needed 7 in the tennis and after some monstrous initial rallies, there were some flakey nerves as there weren't many winners. Eventually the strokes got flowing and with some monster forehands, Lesser finished the job at 7-6.
When asked in a post match interview about the day's play, Lesser advised "in a way, my toughest match was against Elise in the 2nd round / quarters. She totally took me by surprise. Her table tennis was quite steady and her squash was really amazing, I had to work very hard to get any points at all. Ollie I knew what to expect, although his squash has improved, I also had a couple more matches to warm up. Even the badminton (against Elise) we had some rallies, but I had to win 11-0 really to give me some breathing space".
Racketlon fans far and wide are reminded that there is a weekly practice at Redbridge for a Sunday on a fiver, Lazarus said after the event "I advise bringing a friend" and "just let me know if you are coming and I'll sort out some practice for you".
